FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I am new to Kew Gardens and/or new to tennis, will I be able to find parners to play with?
Kew hosts many events throughout the season to assist players in getting to know one another.  Our really popular Wednesday and Saturday night socials bring out all levels of players and many find friends to play with during the balance of the week.  There are also Ladders, Tournaments and Special Events all geared to assist you to meet and play with people you may not otherwise get to know.

Do I or my child need to be a member to take lessons?
To register for any junior programs, you must pay the $35 membership fee first. Parents do not need to be members for children to play at the club however as an adult if you want to take lessons or participate in group clinics membership is required. The only non-member program are parent-classes on Saturday morning.

What do I require for tennis?
Proper tennis attire and footwear are required. A comfortable pair of tennis shoes. Sunscreen and a hat or visor is recommended when it’s sunny! There is a drinking fountain by our club house, and the club also has drinks for sale, but we suggest bringing your own personal water bottle in addition to ensure that you stay hydrated. The club sells tennis balls at the front desk, and balls are provided for socials and round robins.  We provide stringing services in our pro shop.

How do I make suggestions to the Board of Directors?
Talk to the club manager or monitor on duty, talk to a Board member, email the board at board@kewgardenstennis.ca, email any individual Board member.  Speak up at the Annual General Meeting in October.  This is your club, communicate to help improve it.

What is there to do after tennis?
Kew has a beautiful backdrop of lake Ontario. One has the option to do a multiple of things. Take a walk, run or bike ride along the boardwalk.  Take in a sunrise or sunset. Head up to Queen Street and enjoy the many restaurants, shops and coffee shops.  AND don’t forget Kew is a really social club – there is always something exciting going on.

Can I get private or group lessons at Kew?
Private and group lessons are scheduled directly with our Co Head Pros Ira Sherman and Rachel Gould.  Please see the “Lessons” section on this website under the “Play” category for further detail.  Or ask for them at the clubhouse and they will assess your needs in person.

COURT BOOKINGS

How far in advance can I book?
You can book 7 days in advance.  For example, on Monday at 8am bookings will open for the following Sunday.  To make it easier for you, the Online Booking tool only shows the dates you can book.

What time does the booking open for the following week?
Bookings open at 0800 am for the following week.

How do I cancel a booking?
You can cancel online up to one hour before your match, without penalty.

What if I am rained out, do i have to cancel?
Your reservation will be cancelled by the court monitor once he/she has determined that your court is impacted and you will be automatically notified.  If you have not received a cancellation, that means that you’re still expected to show up for your court  (see Rule about no-shows).

Can I only play twice a week?
Your name can be on only two bookings within in a seven day period.  Once you have played a match you can make another booking within the next 7 day period.  For example, if I currently hold a booking on Friday at 0900 and Sunday at 0900, as soon as I play my match on Friday I could book another match at an available time up to and including the following Saturday.

However, you can always “walk on” to a free court - this does not count towards your bookings. Talk to the court monitor who will assign any unreserved courts on a “first come, first served” basis.

Does a ladder match count against my booking?
Ladder matches count against your bookings. Ladder players will have to find a mutually convenient time to play and ensure they have the booking room.

Does my lesson count against my booking?
No, lessons do not count and will be input in the system prior to the 7 day opening window.

Can I book before or after my team match?
Yes but you will need to have the booking room within your 7 day window

What if a team match goes long and I have the a 9pm court booked?
The court monitor will endeavor to assign you a free court, but team play has priority (see Rule about booking courts after a Team Match).  Teams will do their best to start on time but members should book the court understanding that there is a chance they may start late.

Can I book before or after the social?
Yes so long as it is within your 2 booking, 7 day window.

What if I don’t have a computer or my computer doesn’t work?
The club has a dedicated PC/laptop that you can use to login to your account and book courts.

What do I do if someone has booked a court in my name but I didn’t agree to it? Call the club immediately and report this to the court monitor so it doesn’t count against your booking. Upon verification, the court will then be cancelled.

What if I forget about my booking and don’t show? You will be penalized and not allowed to book or play for 7 days.

Can I make a booking with a guest? Yes, but you will have to pay for your guest at the time of booking. The guest fee is $10 (HST included)

Won’t Kew lose it’s community feel by using online booking? This is unlikely as the layout at Kew promotes a social atmosphere. Clubs without a community feel tend to have a poor layout.

Do I have to book right at 0800 am to get a court? This is unlikely with the 2 court maximum and 7 day window but primetime slots (weekday evening and weekends) are always popular so act accordingly.

The 6pm court time tends to go to the same people each day? We can’t see this happening now. Having a two court booking maximum within a 7 day window will ensure more equal access to all members.
